We are looking forward to a wonderful year full of exploration, learning and growth. Our focus is on building key skills, fostering curiosity and encouraging a love of learning. Here’s a snapshot of what to expect this year:
This year, we’ll be delving into the fascinating history, geography, and culture of our local area. Through fun and engaging activities, children will gain a deeper understanding of the community they live in and develop a sense of connection to their surroundings.
Phonics continues to be a vital part of our curriculum as we support children in developing their reading and spelling skills. We’ll be building on their knowledge to help them become confident, fluent readers and writers.
We’re lucky to have a fantastic outdoor area that we use to enrich our learning. Whether it’s exploring nature or simply enjoying some fresh air, outdoor learning is a big part of life in Year 1 and 2.

To support your child’s reading progress, we ask that book bags are brought into school every day. Regular reading at home is also essential, so please set aside time to share and enjoy books with your child. Parents play a key role in helping children succeed. You can support your child by encouraging daily practice with DoodleMaths and DoodleSpell to build confidence and strengthen their maths and literacy skills.

❗Some important bits of information about our class:
- Drop off between 8:50am-9am and pick up at 3:10pm
- Contact/Messages through Class Dojo.
- Children need labelled water bottles and bookbags every day.
- PE every Monday- children wear PE clothes to school.
- £1.50 per week for snack.
Year 2 Team:
Mrs Jewkes is the teacher on Tuesdays - Fridays and Mrs Jones is the teacher in class on Mondays.
Mrs Whyman is the class LSA Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings, Ms Davies is the class LSA on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Ms Shering is in class Monday-Thursday mornings.

Our New Inquiry – Working Together in Our Wonderful World
This term, our Year 1 and Year 2 children will be exploring our new inquiry, Working Together in Our Wonderful World, through the Curriculum for Wales learning window of Cynefin and Fellowship. We will be learning about our local community, how we can work together, and why everyone should feel valued, included and belong. Through exciting hands-on experiences, investigations and outdoor learning, children will develop their understanding of science, citizenship and wellbeing.
During this inquiry, we will:
- 🌍 Explore our local community and what makes Barry special.
- 🤝 Learn about kindness, friendship, diversity and inclusion.
- 🔬 Investigate forces, movement and simple forms of energy.
- 🏃 Develop physical skills through outdoor learning and teamwork.
- 🗳️ Learn about rules, fairness and making decisions together.
