We’re delighted to welcome you and your child to Year 3, an exciting milestone as they transition from the Infant building to the Junior one. This year is all about building independence, confidence and a love for learning as they settle into the next phase of their school journey.
In Year 3, we place a strong emphasis on reading and handwriting, as these skills are the foundation for so much of your child’s learning. Every day, your child will bring home a book, to share and enjoy reading with you at home. Regular practice makes a huge difference, so your involvement is invaluable.
"A book is a gift you can open again and again."
You can also support your child’s learning through platforms like Doodle Learning, which are designed to reinforce key skills in a fun and interactive way.
We look forward to working together to help your child thrive and grow in this important year.

2025-2026
It has been a busy start to Year 3. We are all settling nicely into life in Year 3. Our inquiry is "How Do People and Places Change Us?" As a class we decided that we wanted to know how the Romans changed Britain after they had invaded. We began by wondering why the Romans wanted to invade Britain. We have been looking at some of the Roman inventions that we still use today such as bridges and roads. We are seriously looking forward to building Roman roads from chocolate! More photos to follow. Mrs Jones is looking at the forces involved in firing a catapult with us, which has been lots of fun.
We have Bob visiting our class this week, as we had the highest attendance in the whole school! Da iawn Dosbarth Tri!
There is always a chocolate theme when Miss Curtis is around and we enjoyed learning about Roman numerals by making them with Chocolate Fingers...we enjoyed eating them too!
We have been busy on the Write Path Cymru too. We have retold the stories of the Lighthouse Keeper's Catastrophe, and the Roman legend of Romulus and Remus. We have been looking at making sure our retellings have a beginning, middle and end. We have also been looking at proper nouns for names and using expanded noun phrases.
We have been reading the story of Henry's Freedom Box. It is a true story of Henry, who was a slave in the 1800's who posted himself across America to freedom. It certainly got us talking! We are going to pretend to be Henry now, and write a letter to James, to persuade him to escape slavery too.
Roman Mosaics
We have been researching, designing and making Roman mosaics.
Roman Roads
We have been researching Roman roads. We found out why the Romans built the roads and how they built them. The Romans changed the way that people travelled from place to place. We then built the roads out of chocolate and biscuits. We are then going to write instructions to build Roman "Rocky" Roads in our Write Path Cymru lessons. Day One, Hook Day was lots of fun and very tasty!
Working Collaboratively
We worked as a team to dress Bob, by answering the question "Beth wyt ti'n gwisgo?" We had to support one another by reading the Welsh statements and cheering each other. We supported each other without pressurising anyone. Da iawn pawb!
Roman Shields
We have started designing and making our Roman shields.
Now that the background colour is dry, we have been painting our designs on to them. We loved using the gold paint!
Romans and the Calendar
We have been looking how the Romans changed the calendar. Under the rule of Julius Caesar, the calendar was changed from a ten month lunar calendar to the twelve month solar calendar, with a leap year every four years, that we still use today. When we thought about our inquiry question; How do People and Places Change Us? we all agree that the Romans made a huge change to the way that people live.
2024-2025
Spring 2025
We have been so busy this year already! We are currently thinking about "How Our World Would be Affected if it Never Rained Again?" We have looked at rivers in Wales and around the world, the role of water in World religions, the water cycle, states of matter and created pieces of art with water colour paints. We have been working hard with our new Maths scheme; Maths No Problem and love to tackle the Explore task to answer questions on place value, addition and subtraction. We have particularly enjoyed our writing tasks especially our story settings.
Busy collaborating to answer our independent mini inquiry question
We loved writing our story settings.
We used logical reasoning to solve the River Crossing Puzzle
A spot of sketching whilst we visited All Saints Church
Asking why there is an eagle on the lectern
Acting out a baptism
Dwr Cymru came to visit
Enjoying Maths No Problem
TECHNIQUEST
We had an amazing day in Techniquest. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring all the exhibits especially the wind tunnel, the water tables and of course, the slide! The science lab was brilliant, we enjoyed filtering dirty water, finding the DNA of seaweed, looking at the water cycle and mixing acids and alkali.
Wow! We had a busy Spring term. Here are some of the highlights.
Look at all the ways we waste water!
Oh no! A news flash about a water shortage. What can we do to help?
Being detectives - what are the features of a leaflet?
We debated whether it was important to conserve water.
Our Writer of the Fortnight - a stunning diary of a raindrop in the water cycle
We had great fun during our hook activities. We can't wait to write a leaflet.
We enjoyed our biryani during our Eid celebrations.
Our Q and A session, where we learnt about Eid.
Our Easter bonnets! Aren't they all fantastic?
Summer Term
We have hit the ground running! We have had a busy first week back. We have been learning about division in Numeracy, started looking at the features of a recipe and begun our new inquiry; "How do forces help us work, rest and play?"
We made jam sandwiches for our friend, but we weren't allowed to talk.
We decided that we needed instructions to make a good recipe.
Our hook day was lots of fun. We had to sort out a jumbled recipe too.
Our Writer of the Fortnight for the Water Conservation Leaflet.
We Baked Bread!
We baked bread today. We had to follow a recipe, measure the ingredients, whilst thinking of the different forces involved. We enjoyed eating it too!
VE Day Celebrations
We enjoyed our VE Celebrations with Mrs Jones today.
Busy creating bunting using glas, coch a gwyn.
Blasus iawn, very tasty!
Refugee Week 2025
Miss Curtis read some books to us, so that we could think about what it would be like to be a refugee. We read "My Name is Not Refugee," and "The Name Jar." We also listened to an author read her book, "The Bicycle" via Zoom. We looked at the importance of our names, and how they make us who we are. We thought about what we would pack into a suitcase if we had to leave home quickly and possibly forever. We wrote poems about our names and we created art in the style of Paul Klee, using our names.
