Welcome to Year 2!
We are so excited to welcome you to Year 2, a wonderful year full of exploration, learning and growth. Our focus is on building key skills, fostering curiosity and encouraging a love of learning. Here’s a snapshot of what to expect this year:
This year, we’ll be delving into the fascinating history, geography, and culture of our local area. Through fun and engaging activities, children will gain a deeper understanding of the community they live in and develop a sense of connection to their surroundings.
Phonics continues to be a vital part of our curriculum as we support children in developing their reading and spelling skills. We’ll be building on their knowledge to help them become confident, fluent readers and writers.
We’re lucky to have a fantastic outdoor area that we use to enrich our learning. Whether it’s exploring nature or simply enjoying some fresh air, outdoor learning is a big part of life in Year 2.
"Every day is a chance to learn."
To support your child’s reading progress, we ask that book bags are brought into school every day. Regular reading at home is also essential, so please set aside time to share and enjoy books with your child. Parents play a key role in helping children succeed. You can support your child by encouraging daily practice with DoodleMaths and DoodleSpell to build confidence and strengthen their maths and literacy skills.
We can’t wait to see them thrive!

Autumn Term
Our Big Question: How has Barry changed over time?
We will explore the forces and factors that have influenced Barry's transformation. We will examine how people’s lives, the landscape, the local economy, and the built environment has changed, and reflect on what this tells us about identity, belonging, and community.
Spring Term
Our big question: What do humans require for survival?
We will learn about the effect of exercise and nutrition on our bodies. We will follow and read a range of different recipes and learn how to write our own recipe for a range of healthy foods including ingredients we will have looked after and grown ourselves.
Summer Term
Our big questions: How can stories help us understand nature?
How can stories help us to make good choices?
We will be reading lots of simple, familiar stories to explore nature and decision-making. Texts may include traditional tales and nature-themed stories (e.g. woodland stories, animal characters). We will then create and write our own stories inspired by nature.
