Welcome to Year 2!
We are so excited to welcome you to Year 2, a wonderful year full of exploration, learning and growth. Our focus is on building key skills, fostering curiosity and encouraging a love of learning. Here’s a snapshot of what to expect this year:
This year, we’ll be delving into the fascinating history, geography, and culture of our local area. Through fun and engaging activities, children will gain a deeper understanding of the community they live in and develop a sense of connection to their surroundings.
Phonics continues to be a vital part of our curriculum as we support children in developing their reading and spelling skills. We’ll be building on their knowledge to help them become confident, fluent readers and writers.
We’re lucky to have a fantastic outdoor area that we use to enrich our learning. Whether it’s exploring nature or simply enjoying some fresh air, outdoor learning is a big part of life in Year 2.
"Every day is a chance to learn."
To support your child’s reading progress, we ask that book bags are brought into school every day. Regular reading at home is also essential, so please set aside time to share and enjoy books with your child. Parents play a key role in helping children succeed. You can support your child by encouraging daily practice with DoodleMaths and DoodleSpell to build confidence and strengthen their maths and literacy skills.
We can’t wait to see them thrive!

Autumn Term
Our Central Idea: Cynefin is the relationship between people and the natural world, and how our connection to our surroundings can shape our sense of identity and well-being.
We started off by looking on Google Earth at our local area and found out about what Barry had to offer our community. We then visited our local allotment and enjoyed using the produce to make some delicious vegetable soup! We were fascinated to see how our local area had changed over time by looking at some old photos of Barry and we went on a local walk to see how some things were different but some had not changed!
Spring Term
This term, our inquiry is leading us into the exploration of what humans need to survive.
We have been looking at healthy foods, different food groups and exploring tastes of new food.
We have had fun with a 'ready, steady, cook' session and used our ingredients to make a pasta salad, we've also made healthy smoothies! Year 2 have become designers and advertisers with their very own pizza companies- we've designed logos and adverts for our company then chosen our favourite pizza toppings and finally made our own homemade pizzas!
We have followed on from this by learning about healthy habits and exercise! We have carried out our own research into how to keep our mind, body and diet healthy and then created non-chronological reports to share what we know with others. After this, we worked in teams to design our own sporting game. We considered what rules and equipment we would need. Every group designed a logo, team name and T-shirt and then presented their games to our class and reception for them to join in.
Summer Term
Our inquiry in the summer term will focus on the big question: how do forces and energy help characters in stories to solve problems? We will be delving into lots of different stories and using them to inspire us to write our own blogs, biographies and stories.
